Windows Server 2008 R2 - Choppy Mouse / Console Video Performance

I was playing around with a Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 VM yesterday and getting frustrated with the video performance from the console.  I had vmtools installed correctly but found the mouse was very difficult to use due to the poor display performance of the console.

After doing some investigation, I found that even though vmtools was installed correctly, the VM was still using the standard SVGA driver.  After contacting VMware support, I found there is a "feature" in the current version of vmtools that doesn't install the video driver correctly.

For anyone else who has this problem:

  1. Install VMtools as usual on the VM

  2. Update the Video Device Driver and reboot, viola!

Note: the video driver will be located under C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware\Driver

Best of luck!

-Tom
