Upgrading the WYSE V10L's firmware can be accomplished in a few quick and easy steps. In this KB, we will show you the steps necessary to upgrade your V10L to WTOS 6.3.0_22 (currently the latest version of WTOS available at the time this article was published.)

Note: If you are setting up a new environment, please consider reading our Deploying Thin Clients with VMware View KB before continuing with this guide.  We will build upon the configuration of this KB to upgrade the firmware on the V10L.

In order to upgrade the firmware of the V10L, you must first download the most recent version of WTOS from WYSE's commerce site.  Downloading the firmware will require that you have a valid WYSE Thin OS Maintenance contract in place.  If you do not have a valid support contract, you will need to contact a WYSE reseller.

Determine Current WTOS Version

If you are unsure which version of WTOS your V10L is running, you can find the version information from the System Information menu:

  1. Click the "DESKTOP" icon and select the "System Information"

    WYSE V10L System Information

  2. Click the General tab a take notice of the "System Version"

    WYSE V10L System Version Information
Note: WTOS 6.3.0_22 is the most recent version of WTOS available at the time of publish

Configuring WNOS.ini Parameters

In order to flash the firmware on the V10L (upgrade or downgrade) we must edit the wnos.ini to allow firmware updates.

  1. Open the wnos.ini in an editor such as notepad

  2. Add the following to the wnos.ini

    AutoLoad={0, 1, 2, 101, 102, 201, 202}

    Value Action
0 Disables checking for updated images
1 (default) Enables firware upgrade/downgrade process
    2 Enable upgrade only
101 Enables firmware upgrade/downgrade process but requires the user to either approve or cancel the action
102 Enables only firmware upgrade process but requires the user to either approve or cancel the action
201 Enables firware upgrade/downgrade process but presents an OK button before the process will begin
202 Enables only firware upgrade process but presents an OK button before the process will begin
Note: Values in red are only available in WTOS v6.3 and later

  3. Save and close the wnos.ini file

Extracting Firmware to FTP Server

The firmware for the V10L consists of two files, a boot loader and the WTOS operating system code.   The firmware package you download from WYSE should contain both of these files:

  • VL10_boot
  • VL10_wnos

The VL10_boot is the boot loader and the VL10_wnos is the kernel image for the V10L.  Both files are required for either an upgrade or downgrade; you should take precautions to ensure you do not mix versions of the boot loader and kernel (use matching versions of the boot loader and kernel images.)

Extract both files to the WYSE RootPath you configured from your DHCP scope (this will be the same directory that contains the wnos.ini.)  If you have not changed the default RootPath (DHCP option 162), then this should be $FTPServer/wyse/wnos.  Reboot the V10L to begin the upgrade process.

The V10L will reboot automatically once the firmware has been flashed.  If you are running a version 6.3.x or later of WTOS and you either have ConnectionBroker=VDM (this is the default setting) or have omitted ConnectionBroker from the wnos.ini, you'll notice the login screen now appears with the VMware logo.

You can now follow the steps above to confirm the running version of the firmware on the V10L.

View Configuration Updates

If you are upgrading from WTOS v6.2.x to v6.3.x you may receive the following error message while attempting to login to the V10L

  • not support tunnel

    WYSE V10L Not Support Tunnel

Version 6.3x and above of WTOS support direct connections with virtual desktops.  However, you must enable this feature within View Administrator to allow the V10L direct connection to the virtual desktop.
  1. Login to View Administrator with administrative privileges

  2. Click the "Configuration" icon from the navigation panel

    VMware View Administrator

  3. From the View Servers section on the Configuration screen, highlight your View server and click "Edit"

VMware View Administrator Edit View Server

  4. Choose the "Direct connection to desktop" option from the connection details window and then click "OK"

VMware View Administrator Direct Connection Configuration

You should now be able to login to the View environment as an entitled user!
